There is nothing more pleasant for the baby when his mother or father smiles at him, hugs him, gives him a massage or gets into the water to play with him. Strengthening the emotional bonds between parents and children should be part of the daily routine of the family. Elena Martínez Albertos is co-director, pedagogical advisor and family consultant of SWIMandCOACH, and in this interview with, She talks about midwifery, a technique that arouses the interest of many parents every day.

How can you stimulate the emotion of a baby in the aquatic environment?
Babies are movement and emotion. The look, the caresses, the words and the possibility that those who guide them in their first learning are precisely the people closest to them, offers them confidence and tranquility. Emotions are twofold, of parents who have to learn to teach and babies who are faced with a universe of movement and sensations that they knew (from their mother's womb) and to which they will easily get used to.

What is midwifery and who is it for?
Midwifery is aimed at babies from 3 months to 3 years of age, at which point their entry to schooling begins and, in addition, if they have followed the midwifery courses continuously, at which time they reach their first autonomy in Water. Especially for those of us who work with him swimandcoach method, midwifery is a form of communication between parents-children in which, under our advice and guidance, they teach their children to swim and to respect boundaries. It is necessary to understand that learning is not straightforward or easy, but it is very rewarding and the best way to know the children's responses to different situations and stimuli. It is very funny to see how parents instinctively hold their breath while they submerge their children and how they smile and squeal just like them when we throw some material into the water for the little ones to pick up, THAT IS SHARING.

When can you say that a baby is ready to start midwifery?
The baby can start longer baths at home, which allow him to relax his little body since the umbilical cord dries up. We will go to the pool from the third month, when it is assumed that the baby is already vaccinated and that their reactions to the vaccines have been seen, they have more predictable schedules and mothers are more used to their little one. Of course, it is recommended that in the first months babies be in the water for only 10 min. The time will be prolonged little by little until reaching the maximum 30 minutes. At these ages it is not necessary or advisable to stay for longer.

Before enrolling the baby for a midwifery class, what care should parents have?
The first and most important thing is to know the installation and what it should offer us. It is important that there is ease of access, adequate temperatures both in changing rooms and in the swimming pool, (the water has to be between 30 and 32 degrees, no more, children move, and as we have already said, when they are very small, 3 at 5 months, they are in the water for a short time. Cold water is very unpleasant and if it is hot it does not stimulate), a lot of hygiene at the edges of the pools, in the entrances and sinks, etc. Currently, hygiene in water has routine controls. It should also be required that it be demonstrated that the technician or person in charge of the activity has training in this specialty. And let the parents guide their children in the exercises suggested by the teacher. Unfortunately, about 75 percent of the facilities that offer these courses have no one specialized behind them. For the rest, constant vigilance must be maintained to avoid accidents such as drowning, falls or water entering the baby's ear.

What Babies Learn in Midwifery. To swim, not to be afraid, to overcome obstacles ...?
Especially if the method is adequate, the child will learn to overcome obstacles, to desire and demand more challenges, to gain confidence and more control of your body. The child up to two and a half years approx. it does not have a body; the child IS a body and its communication, expression and autonomy depend on its movement.

A child who is helped to face new challenges and to understand trial-error, trial-success from the earliest childhood will be a child not more intelligent at an academic level (he will not be a better mathematician) but more intelligent at a level. emotional (you will feel more confident). To lose the fear? They cannot lose something that not only they do not have the capacity to have, but they do not know at that age, they will learn it from the elders. Swimming? of course, if we put the child in permanent contact with the water and with suitable progressions, they will learn to swim. In a quarter? DO NOT. It depends on the child and the attendance in 3 years, approximately. That babies float? Everyone, that does not mean that a 6-month-old baby can swim out of a pool alone, it will depend on many factors.

Aside from midwifery, what other activity could parents develop to enhance their baby's excitement?
Be with them and for them. Doing what? doing nothing but dedicating time exclusively to them. It can be during a massage after the bath, it can be listening to music and humming together while we rock them or have them next to our body. It can also be learning the names of the parts of the body or the colors of a room. The only important thing is that we touch the child, we kiss him, we caress him apart from the voice and the look. As Frédérick Leboyer said in a simple and beautiful book, Xantala, children have to be well touched and fed both on the stomach and on the skin.

When they are older, they should be encouraged to achieve challenges not by their parents doing it, of course, but by being by their side to encourage them to strive and achieve it on their own. They can be motivated to start new motor activities, jumping, going down stairs, riding tricycles, etc. It is good to remember that helping them grow is not meeting all their demands but teaching them to achieve themselves, from standing up, riding a bike to swimming.
