Carrying is natural, although you see it as something that has recently become fashionable, it was the method of transportation of their young that our ancestral mothers used and that has been preserved in tribal societies. The benefits of carrying are manifold for both mother and baby.It allows you both to experience special moments: feel skin-to-skin contact, exchange glances, both of you relax feeling your breath and, of course, breastfeed. And it is possible to breastfeed while carrying. It may even be made easier by adopting a physiological position in which the baby has a better grip.
It is necessary that you feel safe and confident with the carrier before trying different positions to breastfeed the baby, so we must take into consideration some previous recommendations:
- The baby carrier must be ergonomic and that is adjusted to the age and development of your baby, that is, that allows him to have a natural position, as when he was in your belly: that facilitates the natural curvature of his back and that the opening of his legs and his thighs are supported by the carrier. Basically, there are two positions for breastfeeding the baby while you carry it, the traditional position, called a cradle or semi-lying position, and the vertical position in which both the spine and the baby's head are kept upright. A general recommendation at the time of carrying is that your baby's head is within reach 'of a little kiss', that is, that you can kiss his head just by tilting yours. Starting from this position, you will have to lower the baby to the level of the nipple to begin to give him his milk. The first thing you should do is loosen the knot that you wear at the waist, leaving the strips hanging on your shoulders. You put your hand inside the bag where your baby is and take it by its legs and buttocks, to place it in the cradle position, at the height of your chest, making a bag again, where it will be comfortable.
With one hand, you support her body and her head and with the other, you take the strap of the scarf to adjust it to the new pressure you need. Once done, go on to hold it with that hand, without releasing the strip that you have adjusted and release the other hand, to proceed to make the adjustment on the strip on the opposite side.
Once adjusted in the desired position, make sure his head is supported in the bag where he is lying and proceed to secure his legs and her back with the corresponding straps, which you will cross under her buttocks in the shape of an X, to hold again in the back with a double knot. Once the shot is finished, you release the knots at your waist and proceed to place it in the initial position, at the height of 'a little kiss' and adjust the straps to your waist again.
You loosen the knots at the waist and, holding a strap in each hand, take the front of the scarf and gently lower the baby to your chest. Then, cross both strips below their buttocks, in the shape of an X, to adjust the double knotted scarf at your waist again. At the end of the feed, loosen the knots at your waist, raise the baby to the starting position and adjust to your waist again.
Start by loosening the rings so that you can easily move the fabric and lower the baby to chest level. Put your hand in the bag where you have the baby, take both legs and take them to one side, towards the side of the bandolier rings, resting their head on the inner crease of your elbow. You loosen the rings of your shoulder bag a little so that the fabric loosens and you can lower it to the height of the chest. Once the shot is finished, you adjust its bag again and raise it to the initial position, going through the rings again, the fabric that you loosened and that is now an excess, to achieve the desired fit.
Let go of the ties around your waist, take the baby by his armpits and carry him at the height of your shoulder, without completely removing him from the mei-tai, only to separate him from the 'seat'. Grab his legs and take them out from one side, so that you can do the cradle pose and support him again in the mei-tai.
Take the straps again by passing one strap under her back and the other holding her legs, cross both straps at your waist, in the shape of an X and always making a double knot at your waist. Once he finishes taking his milk, loosen these knots, loosen the mei-tai and take your baby to take him to the starting position, adjusting again to your waist.
You loosen the knot at your waist and, without releasing the straps on your hand, lower the baby to your chest. Make again, with the strips, an X under her buttocks and adjust to your waist with a double knot. When the feeding is finished, release these ties, raise the baby to the desired height and secure the X-shaped straps and double knot at the back of your waist.
