Recycling and children

Knowing how to recycle all waste, respecting the environment and knowing what we can do to preserve our nature, are some of the great lessons that we, parents, can pass on to our children. In this way, they will grow up having the mentality that it is necessary to take care of our environment, because our health and our lives depend on it.

On this occasion, we give you some tips to teach waste recycling and reuse of the materials that we have at home for the children.

On May 17, the World Recycling Day. But more than celebrations, attitudes are necessary day after day. From 3 years of age, children can already learn to separate waste. And if we teach them through play, they will be more willing to participate in this ecological habit and they will take it as a fun routine.

It is necessary explain step by step to the children why we have to recycle. Children need to know the why of things in order to do them. It is necessary to make them understand that recycling exists to avoid the destruction of our environment. Examples:

- Paper. To make a ton of paper it is necessary to use between 10 and 15 trees, 7,800 kilowatt hours of electrical energy and a large amount of water. By recycling paper, you will reduce the cutting of trees, save electricity and water. In addition, you will be protecting animals such as insects and birds, which depend a lot on trees to live.

Glass. Glass is recyclable because it is made from sand, carbonate of lime, and sodium carbonate, materials that require a lot of energy to manufacture.

Aluminum. Aluminum can be found in a mineral called Bauxite. To extract and process it, it requires a significant amount of electrical energy, and if aluminum is obtained by recycling it, almost 95% of the energy would be saved. This is one of the materials that, like plastic, we must reduce its use and always try to recycle it.

We can follow the rule of the four R's to recycle with children: reduce, reuse, recycle and recover. Reduce the amount of garbage, reuse containers and bags, recycle materials such as plastic, and recover materials to reuse them. We must teach children that all this helps to take care of our environment and the beings that live on our planet.

Parallel to environmental education, parents should also follow some guidelines or suggestions in their day to day:

1. Choose carefully the products we buy, considering the possibilities of reusing the packaging.

2. Avoid buying products with too much packaging. For example, is it really necessary for tangerines, oranges or bananas to come wrapped in several meters of plastic or on foam trays? Wise nature has already provided them with a rough and tough skin to protect their flesh.

3. Whenever possible, recycle bags from the supermarket to wrap the garbage or to take it when you go shopping.

4. Recycle the papers we use at home, using both sides. We must accustom children, from the time they are small, to drawing pictures on both sides of the pages. And then, if we are going to throw the drawing, we will have to do it to the blue container.

5. Make double-sided photocopies.

6. Encourage children to use the board more than paper.

7. Go to paper recycling workshops. Recycling paper is a very fun and satisfying craft, as we can create our own ecological notebooks.

8. Buy drinks in recoverable bottles, use glass bottles for various uses, take the children's snacks in tuppers instead of in plastic bags ...

9. Use energy saving lamps and light bulbs.

10. Spread your recycling experiences with friends and family.

When children learn something through play, they have more desire to experience it and better assume the knowledge and learning. It is for this reason that games are such good allies of education in recycling and caring for the environment. Here we propose some games with which your children will learn to recycle in the most fun way.

- ¡Basket the trash!
For this game we need to locate some large buckets or baskets that we have at home. We will mark each of them with one of the colors of the recycling bins (yellow, blue, green ...). Next, we will collect plastic containers, glass jars, cardboard ... And the children will have to put the garbage in the appropriate container (be careful with the glass!). If we want to make the game easier, instead of real garbage, we can draw the different objects and cut them out.

- Toys with recycled materials
Recycling materials that we have at home and that were going to end up in the trash, we can make traditional homemade toys: tombolas from recycled cans, which must be thrown away with a ball; bowling pins recycled from plastic bottles; stilts made of cans to be taller and put our balance to the test ... As Ecoembes highlights, which encourages us to make all these toys in its guide 'Recycling Fair, traditional games with recycled materials', this is an excellent activity for, also, propose intergenerational activities that bring children closer to their grandparents.

- We turn our clothes and toys
How fast children grow! So much so that we no longer even know what to do with the clothes that are too small or the toys with which they no longer want to play. In addition to teaching them that we can donate them so that other children can give them a second life, we can propose activities at home that teach them to reuse them. For example, we can make clothes for the dolls from an old T-shirt or a bag with pants, etc.

- We invent recipes for reuse
The figures for the food that is thrown away every day around the world are staggering. For this reason, we must teach children to think of creative recipes that help us take advantage of the ingredients that have been left over and that we have in the fridge. Some recipes will be richer than others, but the important thing is to instill in children that feeling of not throwing anything away.
